Moore Haven, Florida - January 2014

We've stayed at the Ortona South Corps of Engineers Campground in Moore Haven, Florida several times, and again in early January.  Its at a lock just southwest of Lake Okeechobee on a canal that connects the Gulf of Mexico at Ft. Myers to the AtlanticOcean at Stuart.  We've found it an interesting place to watch mostly pleasure craft lock through and watch nature.

The south end of Lake Okeechobee includes huge sugar cane farms.  We drove by acres and acres of fields in all stages of production with huge processing plants and there are always fires on the horizon where the residue from harvesting is burnt off.  The soil here is as black and rich looking as anything we've seen, including the Mississippi River Delta.

This was a particularly attractive boat that locked through when we were there.

This was our site looking at the canal.  Notice the right rear tire is low.  It turned out that there was a big cut on the back of the tire attributed to road hazard.
