Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State Park

We drove into the park sometime last year just to see if the RV would fit.  Its 54,000 acres about 25 miles from the nearest town, Okeechobee, and 12 miles from the nearest gas station.  After getting to the park gate its another 5 miles down a sand road to the campground.  The ranger told us the area can be 3-6 inches under water in the summer, but I notice the park is open year round.  During WWII the area was used form bomber training for B-17s.

Deer greeted us as we got to the campground.

A Red Shouldered Hawk flying off just above the deer.

We had a nice campsite in the equestrian campground, but there were no horses while we were there.  It was raining when we drove down the sand road and a layer of sand ended up on the truck.

Rocking chairs overlook the prairie.

We toured the prairie on a swamp buggy that was mostly high and dry, but gave us a better view of flora and wildlife.

We didn't see the wild hogs, but did see where they had been rooting.

And alligators

There is a 90 degree bend about halfway into the campground.  The first picture is looking towards the campground, the other toward the park exit.

The explorers.
